How Lack of Education Harms LGBTQ+ People

The LGBTQ community just wants to exist like any normal person would and Transgender people want to use the bathroom without discrimination. In many colleges around the world the hate and bullying LGBTQ people face is rapidly causing students to drop out. “In some countries 85 percent of lesbian gay, bisexual, and transgender students experience homophobic and transphobic violence in school.” (Amelan, 2023).

Hatred for LGBTQ people creates danger for their community as it can build into violence. Out of all 50 states only one has mandated LGBTQ education and that state is California. Educating people on this topic is only supposed to help people better understand these issues avoiding confusion leading to aggravation. There are countless stories of parents beating, threatening, abusing, and disowning their children for coming out. That horrific situation is very real and extremely harmful to a Childs development and an Adults confidence.
Many people argue against LGBTQ education in schools calling this agenda “indoctrination, normalizing, and de-stigmatizing”. Many parents claim they don’t want an inappropriate woke agenda to be seen and heard by young children. There is a large echo chamber of false information on this topic such as thinking this is sex education gay edition. However what a lot of parents fail to see is that this isn’t just another “birds and bees” talk. This educational program is purely meant to educate you on what gay people are and who they are. For example did the DARE drug program teach you how to create illicit substances or did it aim to teach the dangers of these substances? Didn't think so. Education on LGBTQ issues does not make people become gay but education on why they might be feeling a certain way may just save their life.

Growing up gay was one of the worst experiences anyone can have and that struggle would have been nearly non-existent if there was an outlet, information, or even just someone to talk to. Creating these outlets for people can save a life. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 10-14 year old. That rate increases 4 times when you look at LGBTQ youth. “The Trevor project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ+ young people (ages 13-24) seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds.” (The Trevor Project, 2021)

In California they have an LGBTQ+ curriculum meaning they teach about gay issues in school. This does not mean teaching children about adult topics but rather the education on what and who gay people are. In the state of California the amount of anti LGBTQ+ hate crimes was reported at 172 events for 2024. Comparing the data from the entire state of California a comparing it to just the city of Philadelphia with 119 hate crimes shows where education and acceptance can go.
The most important thing we can do about this issue is to remove the stigma that sexuality changes who you are as a person. By allowing for more education on LGBTQ issues it creates a feeling of familiarity which would help people accept themselves and others. No child deserves to be shut out and cut off from their family because of something they cant control over a lack of education in the parents.
