Closed Mindedness is the Problem Not Gay People

In todays modern age there are a lot of arguments for and against gay people coming from Democrats and Republicans. These figures always try to find some justification for their reasoning however, the only reason the arguments for gay rights in America is happening is because the closed minded refuse to use empathy and perspective in their day-to-day. In 2007 we saw a large amount of hate crimes in the United States roughly 8000 incidents in the year. Around 2014 we hit the lowest rate we’ve seen in the 2000’s, just under 6000 incidents.
Around that same time period of 2013-2014 we saw transgender and gender non-conforming people come out at a higher rate than we’ve ever seen. To put into perspective how large the community grew that is a 1260% increase. When people feel safe and accepted they don’t fear coming out but when people come out the hate crime rate increases. In 2017 the rates increased substantially from 6000 in 2016 to 7000 in 2017. According to Fox News the “Transgender trend” is coming to an end because of the decline of transgender students on college campuses. The reason you see this decrease is due the largest number of hate crimes per year we have ever seen. In 2024 we saw 11,000 incidents of hate crimes that is 13,800 victims within those incidents.
According to the National Library of Medicine participating in non-affirming religious settings leads to a higher rate of internalized homophobia. Using the Bible specifically the christian bible to excuse bigotry against a community of people who want to safely and legally be in a relationship is contrary to that text. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.” (NIV Bible, Mark 12:30, Mark 12:31). This isn’t the only verse in religious text that refers to topics such as that. In the Jewish Torah it states “And you shall love your fellow man as yourself.” (JPS Tankh, Leviticus 19:18).
You could argue the bible verse Leviticus 18:26 which in summary says man shall not lay with man as he would with a woman states that it is wrong to be gay but using that argument wearing different materials in your outfit is punishable. There is no excuse to not at least just wish people well regardless of whether or not you personally agree with their life choices.
Gay people have always existed and will continue to exist in our society it is just a matter of time until we collectively accept every person for who they are. Being gay does not make a person dangerous, evil, or bad but it also does not turn a bad person good. The LGBTQ community are purely trying to love the gender they want to love and be their true self.
